After the Exam.....

thanks all for your support actually I was shocked with the replies as i though no body will check my blog :) but it was so nice that i was wrong :) ..
I finished my first exam today i have another one in Tuesday inshala and for whom who dont know am a medical students in SQU ( sultan Qaboos university )in the Sultanate of Oman
today exam was practical one so you have to take a patient ,take history from him , do examinations for him then should reach a valid diagnosis and a prescribe a proper treatmen sound easy ha :) well it is not as a matter of fact ..
anyway the exam time is one hour so i love to chitchat with the patient for 45 minute taking very prolonged history about his/her illness , go deep into his social and family histoy .. i love to do so .. and it is my jop amean I dont do that becouse am curious ( or atleast i hope that am not ) but becouse sometimes there is strong relation between the patient illness and his/her social ,psychological and family life ..
well this is not our topic today !!! ( Common )
My patient today was a 18 year old married Gentelman who works as a farmer ,,
he was suffering from vomiting of one day duration , knee and back pain for two months duration
..
all the medical stuff was done to him by me( i dont think you really care about those details) and a proper treatment was intiated ..
but i want to focus in his Social history as an example for many many patient we see and they account for a reasonalbe percentage of our society ..
he is working as farmer as i said , taking 115 OMR which is about 299$ per month ( used this site for converting clickhere).. and he have 15 brothers and sisters living in the same house which is apear to be rented and have olny three rooms!!! Well just imagine that .. his father and mother and all the 15 brother and sister and his wife ( he is married since 4 months ) are all living in the same house .. with 5 ppl living in one room gosh this is really crowded fortunatly his father is working so at least they have another salary they can depend on .. his father salary is 150 OMR as he is working as dustman in the municipality
now i want you to imagine few things ..
He is recently married and their private room are shared by anotehr 4 brother and sisters ...
Only one car is availabe in this house owned by the father .. and they are thinking about selling it since they cant cover the maintainance .. and any way what a single saloon car can do for all those buddies ..
i may apear silly to you but imagine a house with no tv no satalite no vidio no computer and no internet no that becouse they dont want those stuff .. they really want .. but they cant unfortunatly afford it ..
as i said before i love to take long history .. that help me to discover the probelm .. he is working as a farmer and he stand and work in speciall position that really over stress the knee and the back .. he cant afford changing his work becouse he cant find any other jop and he cant afford looking for work becouse who will look for his family at that time ..
so it is not the matter of medicine here.. it is more of his social life .. whatever treatment you give him will be temporary .. he knew that .. you knew that but you keep prescribing it .. i hate this jop sometimes ..
we reffer the patient to the social affairs maybe they can help him with something ..
one last thing.. do you belive that we should have 15 children even if we dont have enough money to raise them .. I belive in God , but God also gave us brain to think ..

oh my god god bless their souls masakeeen... oh and then people around us keep wasting all money in stupid things, la hawlla wala quwata ila bilah... I can not imagine that it does exist in our beloved country oman, this is just too sad... It is good to have a job like yours where you feel that atleast you can help them by any mean, even a smile and an encouraging face would be wothing more then anything.
Conducting case history is very important (we do to in speech pathology) most of the time you get to know the source or it leads you to the source of the problem.
Goood luck with your studies, and inshallah you will become one of those who shine in the country!
Najah oh yes they do exisit unfortunatly .. and yes you feel so weak infront of them that you cant do much to them ...
Maybe we have to think before spending 100 OMR in City center next time .,,

It's so sad to read this, but it’s not an uncommon situation anywhere in the Gulf yet its more prominent here in Oman since people had no exposure or education to better them selves so they had no other substitute but to pop babies.
These sorts of families are usually taken care of by Social Affair yet they are not given enough to live on.
Its saddening...only hope that somehow someway we can help more families like these.

Warda they are every where as you said .. and we belive that they do exsist but we still became shocked when we see them .. thanks alot for the reply
That is one example...There many of people like him...It makes me feel so sad... My half sister when she was workking in hospital she use to encounter many problems like that...Thank God we have system like zakat and sadaqa that somehow the money do go for those who are unfortunate or less fortunate than us...But do we all do that...and does the money do reach those who needed it.

iamnasra .. well social affairs are installed in every big hospital here in oman .. and they are doing their jop .. but how many poor people are getting sick enough to be admitted to the hospital and how many of those we took deep history from them and we discover their financial problem .. it is small fraction i guess ..
